Today we tested the SHCC, strain hardening concrete that will be used in the TRAM-project at the TU-Delft campus. We had some visitors that were very excited to see the results.

Self-healing SHCC

For the tram-project at the TU-Delft campus, we designed the top layer in such a way that the SHCC should crack in a zone above a construction joint in the base concrete. Here we incorporated shear keys and we delaminated the two layers in between. The SHCC should and does crack, but the bacteria (Basilisk) we added to the mix heal the crack. In the right picture you see that it works! The principle of the self-healing strain hardening cementitious composite was developed within the SMARTINCS project. The project team (Shan He, Mladena Lukovic, Henk Jonkers and Erik Schlangen) is inspecting the progress.
